Theobald was the fourth of five brothers to come to Illinois from Virginia, arriving with his family in 1846, locating northwest of Rose Hill, where he lived until death. Before coming to Illinois, he moved to Pensylvania in 1822, then to Portage County, Ohio, then Henry County, Rush County, Indiana, then to Shelby County.

He and his wife Susan had either 13 or 14 children (9 or 10 sons and 4 daughters). After Susan died, he married two more times.

Theobald was buried in a small family cemetery near his home. His mother and at least one wife are buried there. There are 11 graves markers in all and possibly some unmarked graves as well.
