The records are somewhat confusing regarding the year in which Ollie was born. According to the Veterans Administration Master Index and his Death Certificate, which is attached, "Ollie I. Daly" was born on 16 Mar 1877. However, according to his grave headstone and Find-a-Grave Memorial, he was born on 16 Mar 1878. It appears that this discrepancy can be traced to the National Cemetery Interment Control Form, which is also attached, for his burial in the Memphis National Cemetery. Like the other documents, this form originally recorded that he was born on 16 Mar 1877 and died on 11 Mar 1953, but his year of birth was later changed to 1878 when the address of his widow, "Mrs. Ella Daly", was also changed from 727 Burke Ave. in Jonesboro, Arkansas to 1547 Maplewood in Memphis, Tennessee before the headstone was ordered on 18 Aug 1953. It is suspected that Ella, or someone close to her, may have had his year of birth changed from 1877 to 1878 when her address was also changed. A review of all documents, including his obituary, indicates that the correct year of birth is most likely 1877, not 1878, and that his headstone is incorrect. While his obituary did not provide his date of birth, it did report that he was 76 while his Death Certificate recorded that he was just a few days shy of 76 based on being born in 1877, not 1878.

Ollie joined the Army 11 Oct., 1897 and was assigned to Light Battery B, 4th Artillery at Fort Riley Kansas. He was discharged 10 Oct 1900 and re-enlisted 11 Oct 1900 and was assigned Battery D, 1st Artillery Jackson Barracks La.

It is in Louisiana where he met Ella Louise King and married on 20 Jul 1901 in New Orleans. His enlistment papers said that he was a farmer before joining the Army. He was discharged 10 Oct 1903.

Ollie worked as as guard in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and one payday he saw that his check was more than it should be. He asked about it and they informed him that they had given him a raise. Ollie told them that he did not want their damn raise and quit. It is said that Ollie was an avid gardener.
