Robert was a son of Robert Gilliland and Eliza Caine. He married Josephine Forest 10 December 1868 in Ozark County, Missouri. The main part of this monument is his; Josephine has an inscription on one side. One of their ten children - Cora H. Gilliland - is also buried in this cemetery
