He was the son of John C. Sheffield and Susan (Hooks) Sheffield.

Married Sarah Elizabeth (Lane) Sheffield about 1860 in Miller County, GA. After her death he married Sallie M. (Brown) Hare Sheffield in 1912.

He enlisted May 3, 1862 in the CSA infantry.
CSA Co E, 1st Reg., 1st Brig., Georgia St Troops.

He was a prisoner of war at Cumberland Gap and sent to Camp Douglas, IL. He was a prisoner from Sep 9, 1863-Jun 15, 1865. Information from CSA Pension #29780 dated Nov. 4, 1914. His second wife applied for the widows pension and it was approved. He died in Kirbyville, Jasper, TX as shown on his CSA Mortuary Warrant.
