James Stroud Bell was the son of Samuel Bell and Elizabeth Faust. He was a sales agent in Philadelphia for the Minneapolis firm, Washburn Crosby Milling Company. In 1888 he moved to Minneapolis, and in 1889 was elected President of the Washburn-Crosby Company, (which later became General Mills). He directed this company until his death in 1915. He also served as a director of the Northwestern National Bank.
James Stroud Bell married 1st Sallie Montgomery Ford, and had a son, James Ford Bell. He married second, Mable Sargent.
