Frances Somerville V. Copeland was the daughter of John McGeorge Copeland and Enolia "Nola" (Griswold) Copeland. In 1904, Chauncey was accused of murdering Isaac Wainscott. There was a trial and Chauncey was acquitted. Frances' father, John McGeorge Copeland served as a juror. Frances went to the trial every day, including many other girls flocking around Chauncey. Frances' parents disowned her after she became pregnant prior to marriage.
Frances married Chauncey Cardinal on September 29, 1906 in Jefferson County, Indiana. Chauncey and Frances had 7 children, Leonard Louis Cardinal, Roy Bernard Cardinal, Edna Marie (Cardinal) Jennings Pryor McCutchan, Geneva Mae (Cardinal) Johnston Armstrong, Alice Amelia Cardinal, Dale Chauncey Cardinal and Dorothy Frances (Cardinal) Roberts. Frances died of uremic poisoning in connection with childbirth of her youngest twins.
