Edwin Bellows was born in Franklin County New York in 1845 and his family moved to McHenry County Illinois by 1850. There he enlisted in the Illinois 95th Infantry Volunteers, Company C at the age of 18 on July 3rd 1863 the same day that his brother Curtis Bellows was killed by Indians near Camp Independence near Oak Creek in what is now Independence California. Edwin was killed 5 months later on July 31st in battle near Memphis, Tennessee and was buried in the National Cemetery in Memphis. The Battle of Hoover's Gap in Tennessee from June 24-26, 1863 is listed as the most recent official Civil War battle in the area at the time of his death.
