Evelyn Lynette McCormick, 91, died February 14, 2004 at The Village in Indianola of congestive heart failure. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 17 at Peterson Funeral Home. Evelyn was born on May 29, 1912 in Lucas County to Cynthia Miller and Charley O. Abrahamson. She attended Renfro Country School and graduated from Chariton High School in 1929. Following high school she worked in a hospital kitchen for two years. She taught country school for two years in Lucas County. Evelyn married Thomas McCormick in 1933. Thomas and Evelyn lived and farmed in Derby, Newburn, Knoxville, Gosport and Melcher, IA before moving to Indianola in 1955, where she lived at the time of her death. Along with farming, they ran a chicken hatchery at Melcher and Indianola. Evelyn enjoyed quilting, sewing, making teddy bears, gardening, raising canaries, and the local Ladies Club. Her favorite show was Wheel of Fortune, especially when she outguessed the contestants. She was active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church and loved to study the Bible. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Harriett; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is survived by eight children, Florence Quick of Kellogg, Dwaine McCormick of Indianola, Marilyn Jackson of Melrose, Alice Cook of Bowling Green, OH, Edith Hardie of Runnells, Dwight McCormick of Indianola, Linda McCormick of Sedona, AZ, and Kathy Conrow of Sherwood, OR. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, February 16 at the funeral home. Donations may be made to Winterset Seventh Day Adventist Church and Opportunity Living in Lake City, IA, where Evelyn's granddaughter resides.
