Died, at 5:45 o'clock Friday morning, December 18, 1914, at St. John's hospital, of typhoid pneumonia, Mark C. Smith, captain of Engine Company No. 1, of the Springfield fire department, aged 48 years. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon from the family residence, 715 East Jackson street. The interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Mark Smith, for seventeen years a member of the Springfield department, was one of the best known firemen in the city. He had been ill only a short time. After his removal from his home to St. John's hospital, physicians entertained hope for his recovery. Wednesday his condition was worse, and he lingered until death came early yesterday morning. He is believed to have contracted pneumonia while on a hunting trip.

Mr. Smith has been captain of Engine Company No. 1, for several years. He enjoyed the acquaintance of a wide circle of friends, and was an active worker in causes before the council and commission of the improvement of the fire department. When the news of his death was received by Chief Bolte, the engine house in Monroe street was draped in mourning. The fire fighting apparatus of the Monroe street house will be a part of the funeral cortege.

"Mark Smith was an efficient fireman and a loyal friend," said Chief Bolte. "I believe he was a member of the department for seventeen years. He was captain of Engine Company No. 1, stationed at the Monroe street house. His death removes a department member who was true blue as a fire fighter and as a friend."

The decedent was born in Illinois. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dollie Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Louis [Nellie] De Long and Mrs. John W. [Kate Alice] Danner [sic, s/b Sanner] of this city; two brothers, Edgar of Taylorville, and Robert Smith of this city. The decedent was a member of Capital Tent of the Maccabees and of Teutonia Lodge No. 166, I.O.O.F. The latter body will have charge of the services at the cemetery, and will attend the funeral in a body.
