Hazel Caroline Carlson Pahan, 90, of rural Underwood, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls.

She was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Tordenskjold Township, south of Underwood, the daughter of Willie and Mathilde (Moen) Carlson. Later, her parents moved to the home farm north of Underwood where Hazel grew up and attended school. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On March 25, 1944, Hazel married Philip Jedidiah Pahan at Rindal Parsonage in Battle Lake. The couple moved to the groom's farm in Sverdrup Township where they built a home and became the parents of two children.

Hazel was a member of the Sverdrup Lutheran Church of Underwood where she was involved in teaching Sunday school, was the Sunday school treasurer for many years, and served in many offices of the ELCW and many church Circle groups. She was a charter member of the Sverdrup home study group and she and her husband were active leaders of the Sverdrup non-stop 4-H Club.

To many, she was known as the "cake lady," having baked and decorated all kinds of cakes for many people.

Hazel enjoyed being with her family and friends. Her other interests were her vegetable and flower gardens, bowling, sewing, quilting for LWR, crafts, and she especially liked to play Scrabble and Cribbage.

Preceding her in death were her husband and dearest friend, Philip; her parents; an infant brother; a brother, Clarence Carlson; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Rivera.

She is survived by one son, William (Jeanie) of Alexandria; one daughter, Phyllis (Robert) Pretts of Superior, Wis.; four grandchildren: Lisa (Keith) Lord of Rogers, William C. Pahan of Alexandria, Mandy Pretts of Superior, Wis., and Robert PJ Pretts of North Branch; three great-grandchildren: Kaileigh and Mallory Pahan and Cole Tyson; a brother, Earl (Christine) Carlson of Crookston; and a sister-in-law, Erma Carlson of Amor, along with many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sverdrup Lutheran Church, Underwood
