Mrs Marie Anna Stanecek, 83, of 209 South 20th Street, Temple, Texas, died Thursday afternoon in Temple at Southland Villa Nursing Center. She had been in ill health the past year.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. at Harper Talasek Funeral Home, the Rev. Albert Michalik officiated. Burial was in the Ocker Brethern Cemetery.

Mrs. Stanecek was born in Hostalkova, Cz. and came to the Seaton community during her teens. She was the widow of Josef F. Stanecek who died in 1946. They moved to Temple from the Seaton community in 1922.

Mrs. Stanecek was a member of the Temple Brethern Church, and was active in the work of the church before she became ill.

She was a housewife for most of her life, but did work for a time at the Curtis Shoe Factory in Temple.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs C.W. Spicer of Dallas and Mrs. Hobart Dillard of Temple; two sons, Robert J. Stanecek of Temple and Joseph L. Stanecek of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, two brothers, seven grandchildren and nine great great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stanecek's father, John Elles, preceded her in death on March 28, 1951 on a Wednesday morning at King's Daughters Hospital after a brief illness. He had lived most of his life in Zabcikville, and he was a member of The Czech Moravian Brethern Church in Ocker serving as Church Sexton. His funeral services had been held on March 29, 1951, at the Hewitt Funeral Home in Temple followed by services at the Czech Moravian Brethern Church at Ocker with burial in Ocker Cemetery with Rev. F.J. Kostohryz officiating. His friends Paul Wychopen, Charles Navartil, Ben Zabcik, Frank Lesikar, Adolf Stepan and Frank Sefcik served as pallbearers.

Her mother, Veronika Vasek Elles, had died at home in Ocker at 5 o'clock on a Friday afternoon May 24, 1935, after an extended illness. At that time her parents had lived in East Bell County for 27 years, and in Ocker since 1910. Hewitt Funeral Home was in charge, and services were held at the Ocker Church at 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon with Rev. F.J. Kostohryz and Rev. Joseph Hegar officiating. She was buried in Ocker Cemetery.

Her parents were married on July 26, 1887 in Moravia.

The family came from Moravia on the ship, Breslau, arriving at Ellis Island.

Her family arrived in Galveston, Texas, on February 21, 1906, on the ship Brandenburg, and from there went directly to Bell County to her father's relatives who had paid for their passage. The original passenger list of the arrival of the John Elles family states that their passage was paid for by Anton Frantis.

Her family lost their home in a hurricane, but rebuilt it in the Spring. Their new home burned down the following Fall.

Marie's specialities were quilt making, crochet, embroidery, and baking Czech pastries--especially kolaches and apple strudel, all of which she shared generously with family and friends. She always had a pet parakeet, and named them all "Budgee".
