Sister Ann Marie Sumic, SSND

First Profession August 12, 1943

Our dear Sister Ann Marie Sumic died this afternoon, January 28, 2007 at Maria Health Care Center in Baltimore. Sister was 98 years old. The viewing will be held tomorrow, Monday, January 29th in the Villa Assumpta chapel from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. with a wake service at 7:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 30th at 10:00 a.m.

Anne Marie was the last of eight children born to Austrian immigrants John and Anna Spelick Sumic in Pittsburgh on April 23, 1908. Three days later she was baptized at St. Mary Assumption Church, the parish in which she first met the SSNDs in the parish school. That elementary education was all she experienced of school life. At the age of fourteen she got a job at H.J. Heinz Co. and held it for the seventeen years she supported her family. During that time her parents and all but one of her siblings died. She was then free to follow a call to the religious life but she believed her advanced age (31) and limited schooling would be an obstacle.

The parish sisters suggested she write to apply anyway and she did; in June of 1940 Ann Marie entered the candidature in Baltimore. In August of 1942 she became Novice Mary Tiburtia and was professed on August 12, 1943. She began her mission of serving in the Motherhouse kitchen immediately and two years later became refectorian at College of Notre Dame of Maryland, a post she held for ten years. Sister's next ministry was service in housekeeping at Villa Maria at Notchcliff.

In 1958 Sister returned to Baltimore, ministering in the kitchen at Institute of Notre Dame. Three years later she joined the housekeeping staff at the School Sisters' aspiranture in Baltimore. She returned to Villa Maria in 1962, as housekeeper until the sisters' move to Villa Assumpta in 1983 and continued at the Charles Street address until her well-earned retirement there in 1991; Sister Ann Marie continued to offer community service for an additional five years.

After these 98 years of devoted service this Cana Community member is now enjoying eternal rest with her family and all the sisters who benefited from that service but most especially Ann Marie has the opportunity to truly know Christ. May she rest in his peace.
