Mrs. Andrews Passes Away At Age of 88
Mrs. Phila Anne King Andrews, 88, widow of the late Ralph Andrews, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl H. Hamlin in Brushton at 12:23 Wednesday morning.
She made her home with her daughter. With her when she passed away were Mr. and Mrs. Hamlin and Mrs. Neilson C. Brush of Malone, her other daughter.
Mrs. Andrews was born in Massena May 1, 1859, a daughter of Cyrus and Mary Houghton King. She was a descendent of pioneer families in St. Lawrence County. Her maternal grandfather, Horace Houghton, came from Vermont, being among the first settlers of Massena.
Mrs. Andrews attended the Massena Academy and was graduated from the teachers' training school. She taught in the Massena schools four years before her marriage to Mr. Andrews on March 28, 1884. Mr. Andrews died in 1915.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrews spent their entire married life in the Andrews homestead at 80 Andrews St., Massena.
This large stone house was built in 1820 by Mr. Andrews' grandfather, John B. Andrews. In this house four generations of Andrews have been born and lived.
John B. Andrews, who was born in Claremont, N.H. in 1788, came to Massena in 1805 and built up a large mercantile business which was carried on by his son, Guy B. Andrews, and grandson, Ralph Andrews, for many years.
Mrs. Andrews was a member of Emmanuel Congregational Church, Massena, and while a resident here, was active in church, social and civic affairs of the town. She will be remembered by her friends and daughters' friends for the cordial hospitality and the warm welcome all received in her gracious home.
To Mr. and Mrs. Andrews were born three children: Guy King Andrews, who died in 1910, Mrs. Neilson (Susan) C. Brush, who resides in Malone, and Mrs. Carl H. (Marion) Hamilton, with whom she lived for some years. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Mrs. Albert Rees Hay of Ballston Spa, wife of the Rev. Mr. Hay of Ballston Spa, and who is the former Florence Anne Brush, and Guy Andrews Hamlin, who is a law student in Duke University, Durham, N. C. She has one great-grandchild, Anne Ellis Hay, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Hay.
Funeral services will be held at the Phillips Memorial Home Friday afternoon at 2:30, with the Rev. David H. Sandstrom, pastor of the Emmanuel Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Andrews family lot in ine Grove Cemetery.
Bearers will be Vernon J. Taylor, Floyd Horton, Thomas S. Bushnell, Robert Squires, Walter D. Clark and Assemblyman Allan P. Sill, all of Massena.
The family request that no flowers be sent.
