The unexpected death of Mrs. Mary Snaith Allen wife of Clifford I. Allen, 40 Ransom Ave., is a loss to the community, far beyond her circle of friends, and acquaintances.
For Mary Snaith Allen could keep the record straight. She knew the history of Massena. Her father William George Snaith, who died in 1940 at the age of 86 years, had come to Massena as a boy of-six with his family in 1860. And he was an historian to the day of his death. He remembered things as they happened; he was "always" accurate.
In 1936, Mrs. Allen wrote a series of articles about Massena homes and Massena families for The Observer. These carefully preserved articles in hundreds of scrapbooks in the community have provided accurate history of Massena.
Mrs. Allen and Robert T. Danforth, whose ancestors also go back to an early day, have always been most helpful to The Observer. They could be counted upon to provide the right answers to matters of community history. Without doubt they have helped the official town historians, Mrs. Ella Lahey, and later Anthony Romeo, in keeping the record straight.
As a member of the Massena Library Board over these many years, Mrs. Allen has devoted much time and thought to this organization. There have been heartaches
and frustrations with the cramped library space in the town hall, and Mrs. Allen has long looked forward to the happy day when the new Warren Memorial Library
on Glenn St. would be completed. She and Earl J. Mattis, who died in November, are two members of the board who will be denied seeing this dream come true.
Mrs. Allen loved her home and her community. She will be greatly missed.
