My Great-Grandmother, Anna Catherine Schaffer/Shafer Benson, widow of John A. Benson, was fond of telling her Grandson, my father, she was: "das Groosmutta" is the spelling nearest to what he heard and spoke of many times. It sounded like he was saying: "Das Grauhss Mudder." From what I have read, this is German leaning toward Dutch. She also liked the saying "Come in if your nose is clean!" and a more direct : "Is your nose clean?" This seems to have it's roots in a popular desire of the time, not to have any part in gossip. If anyone has additional insight about any on this, please share! There were other things like this which Dad shared which made Anna Catherine very real to me. She was Dad's Grandma, full of years, humor, love and wisdom. It took a long time for me to learn her full name and other details. But there was no doubt she was tucked in my heart. Thank you Tina Robson-Jones, Nancyann Irvin, my 1st Cousin David Garrison (now passed), my Dad (also passed) and others for caring for and about Anna Catherine.
