Interment at City Cemetery
The death of Mrs. Greathouse removes from the dwindling circle of “early settlers” one of the most generally known and loveliest characters that ever blessed the city she loved so well herself. As a young lady she came to Temple in 1883, her father, Col. Sanford becoming cashier of the First National Bank. The family removed from Waukesha, Wisconsin to Texas though the earlier home had been at Danbury, Conn., where the child Bessie was born September 12, 1857. There had been short residence in Galveston before the Wisconsin home was established.
July 20, 1883 occurred the marriage with Early B. Greathhouse of pioneer residence in Bell County. Prominent in business, social, church and other circles of the early as well as of the later days of Temple’s being, the devoted couple traveled truly “hand in hand” in happy concordance and mutual helpfulness, to the separation of the ways in God’s providence.
Mrs. Greathouse was “A Lady” – inborn within her and manifested in her everyday sweetness of disposition and gentleness of character was the high nobility of soul, which marks the chosen of the race.
The bereaved husband and sister, Miss Marion Sanford of the immediate household, and relatives less near, are left to mourn, together with the scores of friends and close companions of all the years of neighborly and loving association. Verily a good woman has passed this way and the remembrance of her personality and of her deeds will linger long, gathering fragrance as the mellowness of age steals on the survivors and as they go back in thoughts of the days of their youth and of their loved ones gone on before.
