Ethel Van Engelhoven, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at her home. She was born April 26, 1913 near Tracy in Mahaska County, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Elma McMeins Houser. She attended schools in Tracy, and during high school she played on the Tracy High girls basketball team. On January 8, 1930, Ethel was united in marriage to John J. Van Engelhoven in Mahaska County, and he died December 13, 1972. Together, they farmed east of Oskaloosa for many years. Following the death of her husband, she worked at Holub's, Inc. for several years. She moved into Oskaloosa in about 1977. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, and the ladies quilting group at the church. She enjoyed watching basketball and football.

Ethel is survived by 2 sons: John Englehoven of Oskaloosa and Jerry Van Englehoven of Reed Springs, Missouri; a daughter: Janice (& Stan) Holmes of Baxter Springs, Kansas; 5 grandchildren: Kris, Craig, and Brad Van Englehoven, Rockney Englehoven, and Nicole Rantz; 8 great grandchildren; and a sister: Mabel Griffis of Oskaloosa.

Besides her husband, Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; a stillborn infant son; a sister: Lottie Binns; and 5 brothers: Carl, Dell, Ralph, Park, and Cecil Houser.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Lanny Tuttle officiating. Burial will be in the Bellefountaine Cemetery at Tracy. Visitation will be Tuesday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday 6 ? 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
