Elma was the daughter of Orilla (Densmore) and her first husband George Bradley. The family history is that he went hunting one day and never came back. No one is quite sure what happened to him. So, Orilla decided to find a better life for herself and her two children, Elma & Knight. She moved them to Fort Robinson in Nebraska. There Orilla became a cook for the soldiers on the fort. She met Charles Saxton who soon became her second husband.

Sadly Elma's mother died after giving birth to twin boys. Elma eventually married her step father and had 11 children. Her mother is buried in Union Star Cemetery in Nebraska along with her twin half brothers.
