Jasper Orcemus CRAWFORD was the 4th of 11 children born to Jasper Newton CRAWFORD and Abigail "Abby" Serepta ROBBINS. He was born in Fairfield Township, Fayette County, Iowa on 31 August 1868. Brush Creek in Fairfield Township became Arlington, Iowa, in 1895. Whether he was born in or near Brush Creek in Fairfield Township is not known. Arlington is listed as his place of birth on his death certificate.

He died at his home in Portland, Oregon on 28 Jan 1952. He and his wife Effie HODKINS CRAWFORD are buried in Lincoln Memorial Park, Evergreen Section 78, Graves 1 and 2.

In his younger years, he was known as Orrie. When he migrated to Shaw, Lincoln County, Colorado to establish his homestead on 31 August 1907, we find him listed in many one line newspaper accounts as J. O. I assume that is why he became known as Joe to anyone who knew him in Colorado and he continued to be known as Joe when he moved to Deer Island, Oregon in 1938. Only his sister Anna continued to call him Orrie while living with him in Colorado and while they both lived out their lives in Oregon.

J. O. was first married to Minnie Viola (DETRICK) HAXTON, a divorcee on 10 Mar 1897. Their marriage contract was dissolved via Decree entered 5 June 1912 in Fayette County, Iowa. During their marriage they had lived in Arlington, Fayette County, Iowa; Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas (1900 census); Pawnee County, Oklahoma where J. O. and his brother Frank CRAWFORD had followed their Uncle Lewis ROBBINS in 1901; Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa in 1905 living with Minnie's mother; and finally Shaw, Lincoln County, Colorado. No children were born to this union.

On 17 July 2023, this paragraph is being replaced with accurate information regarding their marriage date and place...On 31 Jan 1918 J. O. CRAWFORD took Effie (born Zeffa Vida) HODKINS as his bride. Exactly where they were married is unknown...Colorado, Oklahoma where her Aunt Janey lived or Corpus Christi, Texas where J. O.'s father and several siblings lived. Corpus Christi, Texas is very possible considering a photo believed to be Effie in her wedding dress was taken in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The accurate marriage place is Paola, Miami County, Kansas, and the date is 24 February 1919.

To the union of J. O. and Effie were born 9 children. J. O. was 50 years old at the birth of Jasper and almost 68 when the youngest daughter was born.
