Ed, as he was most commonly known, was the sixth child and fourth son of William Smith and Eva Marie Shafer Coleman. He was born on 9 May 1921 in Champaign County, Ohio. He married Amelia Alice Armstrong about 1941. They were later divorced. They were the parents of four children, three boys and one girl, who are living (2009).

Ed was an exceptionally good carpenter, well-known for his handiwork and skills, and the quality of his workmanship. He provided his services in and around the North Lewisburg-Urbana area.

He served briefly during World War II, although not much is known about his military service.

Ed spent his later years in the Fountain Park Nursing Home, Fountain Park, Champaign County, Ohio, before his death on 21 September 1966. His sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren still live in the North Lewisburg area.
