He married Gladys Leana Hackley in 1936, and was the father of three children, two boys and one girl. One son and one daughter survive (2009). Jim and Gladys were later divorced. Gladys then married a Hammond.
Jim was a carpenter, like his brothers, and skilled with his hands. He worked at odd jobs most of his adult life.
He died on 9 February 1979 in Marysville, Union County, Ohio, at the age of 62, and was buried in the old section of Maple Grove Cemetery, North Lewisburg, Ohio.
