He was later employed as a section foreman by the Rutland Railroad, and worked on the Northern NY division of for nine years. In the US Census for 1850, he was one year old and living in Westville, NY.
Luke enlisted as a Private in Readville, MASS on 04 January 1864, Co E 4th Reg Mass Vol. He may have enlisted a few months earlier in NY, but was dismissed as being under age. He sustained a head wound and a broken collar bone in battle and was noted for DISTINGUISHED SERVICE.
