In 1934 Miles Kimball borrowed $500 from his boss at Dean Geer Company and printed Christmas cards with a verse that spelled the name "Johnson" using each letter as the first letter of every line. He printed samples and sent one to every Johnson household in Minneapolis. The idea was a success and in 1939, he founded Miles Kimball Company of Oshkosh WI which is still a major mail order catalog in the US.
Miles and his wife Alberta were extremely philanthropic supporting PBS, Oshkosh Library and the Oshkosh local school system among others.
