Andrew Hultberg enlisted in Company D, 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry Regiment on October 20, 1861 at Youngsville, Pennsylvania, and mustered in on November 22, 1861 at Erie, Pennsylvania. He was capture at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek in Georgia on July 20, 1864, his brother, Charles was killed in action on the same day and place while serving in the same company. Andrew was released in a prisoner exchange at Atlanta, Georgia on September 19, 1864. He was discharged on February 7, 1965.

Andrew was married twice. The 1880 U.S. Census for Sugar Grove, Warren County, Pennsylvania, and the 1900 U.S. Census for Mead Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania shows him with his first wife, Louisa F., whom he married about 1873. The 1910 U.S. Census for Sugar Grove, Warren County, Pennsylvania, and the 1920 U.S. Census for Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York show him with his second wife, Virginia A., whom he married about 1902. The Veteran's pension card for Andrew lists his second wife's name as Alice. The census records indicate he had no children with either wife.
