J.J. KERNAN DIES IN RENO

Following a several weeks' illness, Joseph James Kernan, well known Reno resident and member of a pioneer family of the Comstock, where he was born 65 years ago, died yesterday at a local hospital.

Educated in the Virginia City schools, Mr. Kernan engaged in mining there for sometime, and then went to Butte, Mont., where he followed the same vocation. He returned later to Virginia City, and coming to Reno many years ago, took over the former Overland Livery Stable, being associated with R.B. Henrichs and Samuel Kearns.

Some years later, the stable was converted into a garage, and had since been operated as the Liberty Garage. For several years he and his son had conducted the business. Active in civic affairs, Mr. Kernan served two terms as trustee of the county hospital.

Surviving are his son, Joseph James Kernan, Jr.; a daughter, Kathryn Kernan; a brother, Emmett Kernan; three sisters, Mrs. Olive Stratton, Mrs. Stella Gilmore and Mrs. Stacia Snyder, and three nephews, Melvin and Harold Gilmore and Albert Stratton of Reno.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at nine o'clock from the home chapel of the Ross-Burke Compnay, thence to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Cathedral where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Recitation of The Rosary is at 7:30 o'clock tonight at the Ross-Burke chapel.
