JOSEPH WARREN, third child of Albert and Maria Shurts Proctor, was born in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, on Sept. 22, 1847. He lived with his parents until 1864 when he came to Illinois and made his home with an uncle, Capt. Willard Proctor, at New Rutland, as this place was then called. Here he learned the trade of mason with Cornelius Snider and this occupation he followed until four years ago. He was a hard worker, a good workman and plied his trade for many miles around. For six years he served Groveland township as school trustee.
On Sept. 28, 1873, Mr. Proctor was united in marriage to Miss Leora Jeanette Frink of this place and about three months later they took up their abode in the residence that has for over forty-two years been their home. To them one child was born, Mrs. Edna Harms, now living just north of town.
Besides the widow and daughter the deceased leaves three grandsons in whom he was greatly interested; also three brothers, Willard of LaMoure, N. Da., George of Leroy, Kan., Alvin of Sioux City, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Loretta Gillette of Fairbury, Neb., beside many other relatives and friends. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. All unite in extending sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.
For the past three years Mr. Proctor was a patient suffered from rheumatism which crippled him so that it was with difficulty that he got about. Eight weeks ago, he suffered a stroke of apoplexy that left him in a partially paralyzed condition. On Monday of last week he was taken to St. Mary's hospital at Streator that he might be given better care and there he passed away at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, July 18, 1916, at the age of 68 years, 9 months and 26 days.
Funeral service are to be held at the Methodist church at half past two o'clock this afternoon, and Rev. Geo. Davies the pastor will be in charge. Music will be furnished by a male quartet consisting of Leslie Boyd, T. W. Mateer, J. R. Dunham and A. T. Mateer, Mrs. Howard Mateer accompanist. Interment will follow in Rutland cemetery.
