Harriet Mervane Polley was the only child of Norm and Cora (Cook) Polley. She was born in Davenport, Iowa, and grew up in Moline, Illinois, where she met and married Ralph Nathan Wallace in 1928.

Together they raised four daughters including Virginia Mae Wallace (1929 - 2006). In the 1940s, they moved from Moline to the Chicago suburban area.

Periodically, Mervane worked outside the home to help support the family, doing secretarial work for a major Chicago newspaper, and later, copy for a local printer. She retired about 1970.

In 1977, Mervane and Ralph moved to a retirement community in Raymore, Missouri, where she remained until her death in 1999.
