Coart was born in 1803 in Avon when it was in Ontario County (the village became part of Livingston County in 1821). He was the third child of Abraham Hutchings and Catharine Westfall; brother of Abraham II (born about 1798), Nancy (born about 1800), John (1804-1882), Joseph-Harvey (1807-?), Henry (1809-1876), Aaron (1812-1883), Martha 'Herrick' (1815-1890), Anna M. 'Holcomb' (1817-1896) & Jane (born after 1817).

When he was 13, his family moved to Niagara County, New York. In 1834, he married Amy Skinner who was born January 15th, 1813 in Norwich, Vermont. She was the daughter of Orange Skinner (1791-1858). Their first child, Abram was born in Wilson in 1835 and their second child, Henry was born there in 1836.

After the death of their father Abraham in 1836, Coart and brothers Henry and Aaron moved with their families to Bancroft, Michigan.

Bennington, Michigan was organized in 1838 with Lemuel Castle as its first supervisor; the township was named after Bennington, Vermont where some of the early settlers had lived. (In reviewing the census of 1880, the majority of heads of household were born in New York.)

When Bennington was incorporated, the Hutchings brothers relocated there. Their sister Anna and her husband Jordan Holcomb, who had accompanied them to Michigan, remained in Bancroft.

In Bennington, Shiawassee County, Coart and Amy became parents to Joseph (born 15-Mar-1838; who died 15-May-1856 from Typhoid at age 18yrs 2 mos), Reuben C. (1840-1913), Amy (1844-1921) wife of Lanson J. Beardslee, and Nelson (1846-1885).

In 1850, Coart's sister Martha and her husband John Herrick moved from New York to Bancroft. The same year, Coart and Amy's son Edward was born, on October 19th. Their seventh and last child, Newman C. was born on September 10th, 1853.

Amy and Coart would die within four months of each other in 1863, cause unknown.

Their two sons, ten year old Newman and thirteen year old Edward, moved in with older brother Abram. Newman stayed on as a farmhand until he was 24; Edward until his 19th birthday.

Coart, age 60 years, 10 months, 18 days, is buried at Alton Cemetery in Bennington, Michigan beside his wife, Amy.
