John Adam Kessler was born in Kleinfischlingen, near Landau, Rheinpfalz. He came to America in 1842 with his two brothers, Michael and Jacob. Michael also settled in Maxville near Adam. Their parents were Joseph Kessler and Eva Catherina Jaeck, who remained in Germany.

John Adam married Clara Link on Dec 27, 1844. It was the first marriage performed at Immaculate Conception Church. They had eight children together: Maria, Anna Maria, John Adam (died at the age of fourteen, when shotgun accidentally discharged), Caspar, Magdalena, Margaret, Anna, and Clara. After his first wife died, John Adam married Elizabeth Denjie (Schmidt) and they had Several more children.
