Former Missionary to India Called by Death.
Newton, Kan.—Mrs. John Thiessen, 65, who served as a missionary in India under the General Conference Mennonite Church for 28 years, died Aug. 11 at the Bethel Home for Aged where she had resided since May 1963.
Funeral services were conducted Monday forenoon at the Bethel Mennonite Church near Inman, with Rev. P. A. Wedel, the pastor, and Rev. A. R. Shelly of the Board of Missions officiating.
The former Elizabeth Wiens, Mrs. Thiessen was born at Richmond, Texas, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. A. F. Wiens. When she was about a year old the family moved to Inman, Kan. In 1904 they moved to Chicago where her parents were pioneer city mission workers.
Her marriage to Rev. John Thiessen occurred May 4, 1921, in Chicago. In September of that year they left for the mission field in India, serving until 1949 when they returned to make their home at North Newton, Kan. Since then they had lived at Henderson, Neb. and Moundridge, Kan.
Surviving are her husband, of the Memorial Home, Moundridge; three daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Eleanor) Ewert of Newton, Mrs. Theodore (Muriel) Stackley of Stull, Kan., and Mrs. Demetrios (Dorothy) Xouris of Wichita; two sons, Rev. Harold Thiessen of Summerfield, Ill. and Dr. Arthur Thiessen of Chapma, M. P., India; six sisters; and 16 grandchildren.
