The Rev. Winder earned his undergraduate degree from Grove City College and his doctoral degree from Louisville Theological Seminary.

Dr. Winder served as pastor to Presbyterian Churches in Clintonville, Edinboro and Pittsburgh before moving to Mansfield in 1958 to accept the pastorate of First Presbyterian Church.

Under Dr. Winder's leadership, First Presbyterian Church moved from North Mulberry Street to its current classic Williamsburg-style building on the corner of South Trimble and Millsboro Roads. More importantly, under his influence, the church grew in membership and influence in the Mansfield area. He retired from full-time ministry in 1977.

Dr. Winder continued to minister on an interim basis in several Richland County-area churches following his retirement, and in his quiet moments, enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

His beloved wife of 66 years, Gertrude "Trudy" (Eppinger) Winder, preceded him in death January 1, 2008. Also deceased is their son, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, David F. Winder.

Dr. Winder is survived by his daughter, Nancy W. Carpenter (her husband, David Carpenter, is deceased) of Shaker Heights; his son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Lee Winder, of Hudson; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. and Leslie Winder, of Philadelphia; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
