William married Minerva Shelton daughter of Jeremiah and Jane Little Shelton on 1 October 1851 in Hamilton County, Illinois. There were eight children born of their union. David M., James C., America Frances, Isaac R., John W., Jeremiah, Thomas M. and James.
William R. McElvain died on 8 September 1898 and is buried near a large cedar tree in the New Prospect Cemetery.
