Funeral Today For Pioneer, Tom Windham
Funeral was scheduled for 4 p.m. today for Tom Windham, Sr., 92, oilman, rancher, and president of the Baird First National Bank for more than 30 years.
Windham, familiarly known to friends as "Uncle Tom" died Tuesday at his ranch home, a mile and half west of Oplin, where he had lived for 75 years.
The prominent West Texas pioneer and landowner had been bed-ridden since he was injured in a fall in 1947. He lost his eyesight in that year.
Final rites were planned at his home, with the Rev. J. T. McKissick, Abilene minister, officiating. Burial will be made in the Tecumseh Cemetery, beside the grave of his wife.
Elliott Funeral Home of Abilene had charge of arrangements.
A native of Texas, he was born Aug. 8, 1859, in Angelina County. He and his bride moved to near Oplin in 1876. He was a member of the Christian Church, and the Tecumseh Masonic Lodge.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Winnie Jordan and Mrs. Charlie Straley, both of Oplin; five sons, John Windham of Abilene, and Sam, Earnest, Frank, and Tommy, all of Oplin; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Grandsons were named pallbearers.
