Harley Colwell married(1), November 8, 1838, Eliza Brown (a daughter of Moses Brown, and a direct descendant of Chad Brown, one of the early settlers of Rhode Island, and one of the important figures of his day).

TEN children were born of the first marriage, as follows:

(1) George Bowen Colwell, born Aug. 10, 1839 (married Maria Cheney, daughter of Elder Cheney); (2) James Brown Colwell, born Aug. 18, 1841 (married Sarah Carpenter); (3) Mary Eliza Brown Colwell, born Oct. 23, 1843 (died in early youth); (4) a child who died in infancy; (5) Maria Harris Colwell, born July 28, 1846 (became the wife of Henry Gleason, and died leaving one son, Harry N. Gleason); (6) Harley Francis Colwell, born Aug. 12, 1848 (married Carrie Seaman, by whom he has had one child, Willis D. Colwell); (7) Maurice Gilbert Colwell, born Dec. 13, 1850; (8) Ella Elizabeth, born Feb. 14, 1855 (became the wife of John H. Coffin, son of Captain Coffin); (9) William Buchanan Colwell; and (10) Pardon Moses Colwell, born Oct. 26, 1858 (married Almeda Mowry, and died leaving a son, Harry A. Colwell).

Harley Colwell married (2) Catherine H. Bickford, of Maine, whose death occurred March 24, 1898. Of the second marriage but one child was born, Leon Colwell.
