The son of Andrew & Catherine (Wolgamuth) Altland, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall an had dark hair and gray eyes. He married Elmira King and fathered Ida M. (b. 1863), Katie M. (b. 1867), Charles H. (b. 03/21/69), John Andrew (b. 05/10/70), Joseph Allen (b. 1872), Margaret Elsie (b. 11/17/74 - married Charles King), and Sally Ann (b. @1877).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg as a substitute for James Dove March 8, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 20 as a private with Co. I, 56th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 1, 1865.

He died in Big Mount, Paradise Township, from "peritonitis & debility" caused by "chronic amoebic dysentery."
