Death Cancels Reunion Plans

BAIRD, June 4 (SPL) – Death of Mrs. Mary Ann Brightwell, 87, today caused cancellation of the annual Gilliland-Windham families reunion.

Mrs. Brightwell, a pioneer settler of Callahan County, had planned to attend the event. But she died in her sleep Friday night at her ranch home on Burnt Branch, where she had lived since 1878. She had been in failing health several years.

Funeral is to be held from the ranch home at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Lloyd Saunders, Baird Methodist pastor, in charge. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery. Born in Angelina County December 16, 1851, she came to Brown County with her parents in 1871. There she married to J. P. Brightwell January 1, 1874. Mr. Brightwell died there in 1888.

Mrs. Brightwell is survived by one son, W. P. Brightwell of Baird; two daughters, Mrs. W. O. Spencer and Mrs. George Baum, both of near Baird.
