Elmore Higby was a son of Nathaniel and Mary (Barkley)Higby. His father, a native of Orange County, New York arrived in Oakland County, shortly after 1837 and settled in West Bloomfield Township. His mother, a daughter of John Barkley, was also an Orange County, NY Native.
Elmore and his brother, Aaron Higby farmed together in a West Bloomfield Twp, homestead.
Elmore married Sarah A. Pickering, on February 1, 1876.
They had five children, including:
a child who died in infancy;
Mattie, who married Edward R. Haggerman;
Ida A., a school teacher, who died at 24;
Aurilla C., who married Floyd Beardsley of Pontiac; and
Clarence Higby.
