Nashville, June 4, 1932 - Rush S. Hazen, 78, prominent business man of Knoxville, died today at 7 p.m. at Madison sanitarium after an illness of several weeks. His body will be taken to Knoxville today.

Mr. Hazen suffered an attack of influenza several months ago and never fully recovered. He was receiving treatments and was believed to be on the road to recovery when a sudden relapse caused his death.

Born in Knox county, August 13, 1854, Mr. Hazen spent practically all of his life in Knoxville and Knox county. He was a son of G.M. and Mary Strong Hazen.

He was president and general manager of the wholesale grocery firm of Hazen, Trent & Harrell Co., also chairman of the board of directors of Morris Plan bank. The family home is at No. 1633 Dandridge pike. He was prominently identified with religious affairs being a member and elder of First Presbyterian church. He also served once as an alderman.

Mr. Hazen was educated in the public schools of Knox county and at the University of Tennessee. In 1872 he left school and began his business career, his first position being that of a clerk with Ambrose Gaines, shoe dealer, of Knoxville. Later he was employed by McNulty, George & Hall. Then in 1876 he traveled as a salesman for Zimmerman & Wilson. wholesale grocers. He then was a salesman for Coffin, McKinney & Co. for two years and during the three succeeding years traveled for Louis & Carhartt.

From 1892 until 1897 Mr. Hazen was a traveling salesman and a member of the firm of W.B. Lockett & Co. In 1897 he organized the firm of Hazen, Lotspeich & Thomas, wholesale grocers. This firm later became known as the Hazen & Lotspeich Co., and after the death of Lotspeich, Hazen reorganized the company, the corporate name being changed to Hazen, Trent & Harrell Co. Hazen remained as president and general manager.

In June 1882, Mr. Hazen was married to Miss Evelyn Mabry, daughter of Gen. Joseph A. Mabry and Laura E. Churchwell Mabry. Children who survive are Mrs. Lillian Hazen Simmons, Mrs. Marie Hazen Caldwell and Miss Evelyn M. Hazen. He also is survived by two brothers, Asa Hazen and T.F. Hazen, Sr., both of Knoxville.
