Birdie was born Aug. 13, 1906 in Canby, Minn. to Frank and Barbara (Retterath) Winkels and was raised on a farm until coming to Austin in 1924. She worked at the Fox Hotel for several years until going to Rochester to work for the Rochester Country Club. On May 30, 1931 she was united in marriage to Hugh Dunlop in Rochester, Minn. The couple then moved to Austin where she and her husband raised their eight children.
Birdie was a devoted housewife and a long standing member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She enjoyed Bingo and was tagged "Bingo Birdie." She also enjoyed playing cards with her many friends and going to Diamond Jo's. Birdie was known for her embroidered dish towels and table cloths for all of the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved to bake pies, cookies and cakes.
Survivors include her eight children, Barbara (John) Felten, Rose Creek, Marjorie Petersen, Austin, Jack (Marlys) Dunlop, Austin, Nancy (Cliff) Reed, Austin, Jim Dunlop (Dee Wilmot), Austin, Tom (Lisa) Dunlop, Austin, Bob (Jeanette) Dunlop, Salado, Texas, Debbie (Clarence) Horejsi, Owatonna; 44 grandchildren; 99 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ollie Hanson, Canby; nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh on May 20, 1974; parents, Frank and Barbara Winkels; nine sisters and brothers; two sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; a great-grandson.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. and also from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The casket bearers will be Steven Felten, Lynn Riemann, Raymond Leeper, Terri Law, Jason Dunlop, Joseph Baldus, Cindy Uher and Joseph Dunlop.
