Elizabeth Frances (Wellner) Steiber was the seventh child born to John H. Wellner and Elizabeth Hanck Wellner of Kimball, South Dakota. After April 10, 1930 she married Grant Franklin Steiber, son of Reinhard Philip Steiber and Caroline (Carrie) R. Houge.

Elizabeth moved with her family from Illinois to abt. 1906 due to her father suffering from working in a coal mine. He developed miner's consumption. So they moved to the drier climate of Kinball, Brule Co., SD. As a child she worked on their farm. She attended grade school through the 8th grade and excelled in spelling.

In 1929 she married Grant Franklin Steiber, son of Reinhard Philip Steiber and Caroline (Carrie) R. Houge. She lived on his farm after Grant's first wife, Rosa Arens died at age 29. briefly before they moved into Mitchell in 1930. Elizabeth first came to help widower Grant with his four young children and is listed as a housekeeper in the 1930 census.

Elizabeth cared for Grant's four stepchildren and had six children of her own with Grant. Two died in infancy, Mary Jane and Donald Lee.
