Greenville was born in Kentucky, the son of James Thompson and Martha Lambert. He emigrated to Missouri when a small boy, where he grew to manhood. At about the age of 20 years, during the discovery of gold in Colorado, he went west, staying there about four years. He returned to Iowa in the winter of 1865.

He married Harriet L Henderson, daughter of Jesse R Henderson and Sarah Mariah Odell, on 25 Jul 1863. Hattie and Greenville had eight children. Known children are: Maud A (Smith), Claud T, Della F (Smith), James (who died in infancy), Robert B, Richard Y, Edith B (Clutes) and Burnice (Throckmorton).

Hattie died in 1884 and Greenville remained single about five years. He married Mrs. Jane Parsley about 1889 and they had five children: Jesse, Rua, John, Vesta, and William.

Greenville died at Inola, Indiana Territory, at the age of 66 years 2 months 25 days.
