Charles and Robert Clem were driving a delivery truck owned by Fred David, David's Market, when they were struck by a B & O passenger train at College street. The truck burst into flames, the boys were both trapped in the wreckage and the truck was carried a block before the train stopped.
The boys were off work and had attended a Sunday school party at the David home. Mr. David had asked Charles to take Robert home. It was Robert's last day of work for Mr. David as he was returning to work for the NYA.
Charles was born in Decatur April 8, 1923 and had lived in Blue Mound. He was a junior in Decatur High school and a member of the First Christian church.
He leaves his mother, Mrs. Virginia Whaley and step father, George Whaley, both of Decatur. His father, Orville Allen, died in 1926. He leaves a brother, Orville, and a sister, Mary Sue, both of Decatur; two grandfathers, Albert Allen of Blue Mound and Charles Milligan of Mt.Auburn.
Burial will be in Hall cemetery.
