Melvin "Peck" Smith, age 89, of Russellville, died Saturday, February 7, 2004, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. A son of the late Joe I. and Blanche Hossman Smith, he was born October 10, 1914, in the Mill Creek Community near Russellville. He was the former manager of Truman Shinn's Peach Orchard, working for over thirty-one years there, and retired from the Russellville Street Department. He attended East Point Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Oma I. Smith; four brothers: Riley, Clifford, Lester and Billy Ray Smith; and a sister, Ethel Meek. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Kenneth Lavern and Ruth Smith of Dardanelle; and James Harold and Peggy Smith of Russellville; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Joyce and Marshall Baker of Russellville; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Robert and Mary Lou Smith of Sperry, Oklahoma; two sisters: Bertha Byrum of Dover; and Naomi Roberts of Norwalk, California; nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, and a number of nephews and nieces.

Funeral will be 2 P.M., Monday, February 9, 2004, at East Point Baptist Church, with Rev. Ira Taylor and Rev. Ronald Wayne Smith officiating. Burial will be in East Point Cemetery, by Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.

Active pallbearers will be David Smith, David Main, David Holiman, Doug Baker, Glen Allen Haney and Gerry Whorton. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Johnston and Wayne Nordin.

The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon, from 2 to 4 P.M., at the funeral home.
