When his mother died his father remarried to Susan M. Gillis Dailey who had several children by her first marriage. Henry and Susan also had one daughter Ruth Ellen (Confer).
Thomas moved to Jay County, Indiana when his father and second wife moved the family. It was from this county that Thomas served in the Union army during the Civil War.
On 4 March 1869 he married Amanda A. Sarber McGowan, a widow with a small son, Andrew McGowan. Two sons were born to Thomas and Amanda, Sylvester Clinton and Harvey Anthony Smith. Amanda died on 27 May 1874 in Balbec, Jay County, Indiana and was buried by her first husband, William McGowan in the North Twibell Cemetery in Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana. Thomas Smith never remarried.
He died on 28 November 1928 and his death certificate shows that he was buried in the Hillside Cemetery even though there is no tombstone.
