Joseph James Neighbours was born in Newberry South Carolina ~1824 to Sarah Hipp & William Richey Neighbours.

He married Mary Polly Copeland, they had five children who survived infancy.

Joseph and his brother William joined the Confederate Army together on 1 Aug 1863 in South Carolina, 27th Regiment, Company G. During battle in Petersburg on 24 June 1864, William was captured and later died in a POW camp in Elmira New York, Joseph was wounded and died in a Hampton Virginia Hospital on 27 July 1864.

Buried in the Confederate section of the Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, Virginia.
