Daughter of Leopold and Amelia "Molly" (Minster) Beir, wife of Leslie Roy Townsend, mother of Arthur A. Townsend. Born able to hear, disease destroyed her hearing. As a young girl, she was sent to the NY Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb in Manhattan. She met her husband, Leslie, there. She was taught to use her hands to spell her thoughts, and never learned sign language.
