John served in Captain William F. Cardiff's Independent Militia Company of soldiers from Fulton County that were absorbed into Company B of the 3rd Maryland Potomac Home Brigade during the Civil War. He enlisted on October 10, 1861 and was mustered into Pennsylvania service on December 2, 1861. The company as a whole was transferred into Company B, 3rd Maryland Potomac Home Brigade in early 1862. He was mustered out as a private at Buckhannon, WV on February 8, 1865.

Died from Bright's disease.

Married Lucinda Myers on February 19, 1857 by Jacob Walters.
