Alfred James "Robbie" Robinson, 30, of Ironton, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at his residence.
The Ironton native was born Aug. 20, 1978, the son of Sonja Birchfield Taylor of Ironton and the late Alfred A. Robinson.
He was a 1996 Ironton High School graduate and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by a maternal grandfather, George Washington Birchfield.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Sean Robinson, of Kitts Hill; two brothers, Michael J. Battise, of Ironton and David Taylor, of Portsmouth; two sisters, Tonya Majors, of Youngstown, and Elizabeth Clark, of Ironton; his maternal grandmother, Sue Birchfield, of Ironton; his stepfather, James Taylor of Ironton.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Carter and Raymond Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. An apparent domestic dispute ended in the death of an Ironton man and the stabbing of two sheriff's deputies early Monday.
The sheriff's office received a call of a disturbance just before midnight Monday at Ben Howell Road where it was reported a couple were fighting in their front yard. When deputies arrived they found a vehicle with all its windows smashed in, according to a press release from Sheriff Tim Sexton.
A male subject began attacking Deputy Brian Chaffins through an open cruiser window and stabbed him in the leg, the release said. Backup was requested and a second deputy was dispatched.
"Both deputies then observed the subject flee toward a residence," Sexton's release stated. "The deputies proceeded to that residence since officers heard yelling and screaming. The deputies, knowing the subject was armed and concerned other lives may be in danger, proceeded to the residence and were confronted by the suspect armed with a knife."
When the deputies came to the front porch of the house, the armed individual came at the two deputies, who then tasered the subject. The subject continued his attack and the second deputy, Jamie Pruitt, was stabbed twice in the lower back.
"At this point both deputies did fire their weapons upon the subject," the release states.
Coroner Dr. Kurt Hofmann pronounced Alfred Robinson, 30, of 185 Twp. Road 119, dead at the scene.
Both deputies were transported to an area hospital for treatment of stab wounds. Their conditions were not available at press time.
"I have requested the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification to process the scene," Sexton said. "In addition, Ohio BCI is being asked to provide personnel to complete the investigation into this officer-involved shooting. BCI&I has been contacted so we will have an impartial investigating agency providing an independent investigation and review of this matter. At this point there is nothing to suggest the officers strayed from their job expectations or the policy of the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office."
