DEATH NOTICE: The Home Sentinel, Manti; Tues Jan 28, 1890; FHL film 1486737:
Diptheria is raging in Gunnison, so Dr. Olsten says, Selectman Jas Metcalf has his whole family down, one resulting fatal.

NAME: 1880 Census has her name Mariana. Sanpete County Sexton's Record has her name Mariana. Her inscription on the monument in the Fayette Cemetery has Laura E. It is clearly the same child, as the birth date on the tombstone matches her birth date given in 1880 census, and the death date on the tombstone matches the death date given in the Sanpete County Sexton Cemetery Records.

James & Caroline Metcalf lost three children to diptheria in a three-week period. The first was nine year-old Marianna or Laura E. The second was eleven-year-old Mabel, who died on January 29th, and finally on February 8th Lester, who was barely six.
