In 1860, he was a farmer living in Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, and stood 5' 5" tall with black hair, brown eyes, and a black complexion.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Readville, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, June 10, 1863, and mustered into federal service there June 22 as a private with Co. H, 55th Massachusetts Infantry. The army charged him $1.39, a second time $1.15, a third time $2.33, and a forth time paid $21.15 for lost ordnance and other equipment. He was hospitalized at the post hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, April - June 1865, detached to duty there as of July 5, and honorably discharged with his company August 29, 1865.

In 1880, he was a hostler living in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
